Even here in Japan, the name of Seattle-based music producer Sean Wolcott is becoming a hot topic. From his masterpiece "Lady Swordfighter," a fictional Japanese film soundtrack considered the pinnacle of success, the sorrowful Japanese ballad "Nine Lives Are Not Enough" will be released as a limited-edition 7-inch in Japan on Tuesday, September 9th by FOURTH WAVE RECORD FACTORY.

"Lady Swordfighter," the ninth installment in the Library series, astounded fans of Japanese music and Japanese films. This particularly memorable track brilliantly revives the reverberations of exploitation scores found in period dramas and mystery films of the early 1970s. Built around a core of psychedelic jazz funk, it intertwines with a mysterious, profound Japanese sound. Shakuhachi, koto, shinobue flute, and taiko drums intertwine in a growling groove, and together with distorted fuzz, are sublimated into a melody of sadness that stirs the soul. It is a drama depicted through sound, an unprecedented sound scroll.

Seattle’s visionary producer Sean Wolcott has crafted one of his finest works yet: Lady Swordfighter, an imagined Japanese film soundtrack that has already become legendary among Wamono and cinema fans. From this masterpiece comes the haunting ballad “Nine Lives Are Not Enough”, sung in Japanese and now issued for the first time as a Japan limited-edition 7-inch from Fourth Wave Record Factory, available September 9 (Tuesday).

Blending psychedelic jazz-funk with the mystique of traditional Japanese instrumentation—shakuhachi, koto, shinobue, and taiko—Wolcott conjures a sound world that recalls the raw power of early ’70s exploitation scores while pushing them into new territory. Distorted fuzz lines meet spectral Japanese melodies, ascending into a drama of sorrow and intensity.

More than just a song, Lady Swordfighter is a cinematic soundscape—an unprecedented audio picture scroll.
